Whereas Rwanda is credited for its stunning mountain gorillas, primates and hilly landscape, it is also credited for its spectacular savanna grassland in Akagera National Park that offers refuge to several big game and wildlife species. Rwanda’s savanna grassland meets that of Kenya. A safari to Akagera National Park gives you a chance to explore wildlife species especially large herds of  zebras, buffaloes, Impalas,leopards, Lions, elephants, hippos, hyenas, giraffes, Rhinos, several antelope families and crocodiles. Akagera National Park is also ideal for bird watching whereby you have opportunity to explore over 525 bird species that have been recorded. Akagera National Park covers an area of 112,000 Hectares in the East of Rwanda on the Border with Tanzania. It is named after the Akagera River that flows along its eastern boundary and feeds into the Labyrinth of Lakes, Rolling hills of Accacia Bush with panoramic views across scattered grassland, patches of thick forest and mosaic of swamp – fringed lakes along the meandering Akagera Watercourse contribute to this park’s almost unrivalled scenic beauty.

Full Itinerary

Day 1: Depart from Kigali to Akagera National Park
Following your arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will meet your tour guide who will give you briefing on the destination Rwanda. You will then set off to Akagera National Park East of Rwanda through the border with Tanzania about 2 and half hours’ drive where you will check into the park through the headquarters and after commence the tour with a game drive to spot some animals. After you will transfer to your lodge and have lunch and relaxation. After, you will embark on a boat cruise on Lake Ihema to sight aquatic and several wildlife species along the banks. For cases where boat safari is interrupted by weather conditions, you will set off for another game drive and navigate through several game tracks. Return to the lodge where you will spend the night at

Day 2: Morning Game drive and afternoon boat cruise on Lake Ihema
After breakfast, you will set off for the exhilarating wildlife viewing in the stunning savanna landscapes of Akagera National Park. This park offers refuge to herds of buffaloes, Maasai giraffes, elephants, impalas, water bucks, bush bucks, reed bucks, Oribis, elands, roan antelope, lion, leopards and many more. In May 2017, 18 Eastern Black Rhinos were brought to the Park from South Africa in a Conservation mile stone for the Country and for Rhino Conservation and their arrival restored Akagera National park’s status as ‘a big five’ Park

After return from the 3 to 4 hour wildlife viewing and get to the lodge for relaxation and lunch after which you will set off for Lake Ihema the second largest Lake in Rwanda for thrilling boat cruise. This lake offers refuge to several large populations of hippos and Nile crocodiles as well as distinct birdlife. Elephants tend to stay around the Lakes. After, you will return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay at Ruzizi Tented Camp, Akagera Game Lodge and Dereva Hotel.

Day 3: Return to Kigali City for a visit of the Gisozi genocide memorial site and after departure 
Breakfast in the morning and after set off to Kigali which is about 135 kilometers drive crossing the stunning Rwanda countryside that you sight when you reach early enough to Kigali. On arrival, you will embark on the Gisozi genocide site visit to explore the historical terrific genocide that took place in Rwanda in 1994 where thousands lost their lives. After you will drive to Kigali International Airport for your departure flight in the evening and this marks the end of your 3 day safari in Akagera National Park.
